UVA Darden Powered by Purpose Campaign · 2025 Report

The campaign didn’t change Darden. It accelerated us.

$632 Million

70% Alumni participation

Thank you.

That is where this story begins.

The Powered by Purpose campaign is a story of generosity, vision and trust in Darden’s mission. None of what you see in these pages — the scholarships that change lives, the faculty shaping ideas, the spaces where our community gathers — would exist without you.

To our alumni, donors, volunteers, faculty, staff, students, parents, friends, UVA colleagues and the Darden School Foundation: this achievement belongs to you. Your belief in Darden’s mission has transformed the School and set the course for its future.

This report captures only a fraction of your impact. Behind every number is a face, a family, a story — all made possible by your generosity.

With deepest gratitude,

Darden has never played by the rules.

We believe in the power of high-touch learning, hard questions and human-centered leadership. In showing up prepared, thinking on your feet and lifting others as you climb.

Powered by Purpose gave Darden the momentum to do more:

  • Attract and retain world-class faculty
  • Open doors for top students through new scholarships
  • Reimagine the Grounds and build for the future

With $632 million in total impact — and 7 in 10 alumni stepping up — the campaign propelled Darden into a new tier of influence, impact and global recognition.

Our endowment and net assets have nearly doubled in the last decade, now exceeding $1 billion and placing Darden among the top business schools in the world. This enduring resource fuels scholarships, faculty excellence and program innovation year after year, ensuring we can lead for generations to come.

We’re now the No. 1 public business school in the world (Financial Times, 2024) — and consistently ranked among the top 10 in every major MBA ranking.

Voices of change

Empowerment can come from a couple of different places. It can come from a loved one, friend, family member. But it can also come from an institution … that selects you and believes in you, and is willing to put its name and resources behind you.”
Malcolm Stewart (MBA ’24)
Scholarship Recipient
A person smiling
When I got the call, I actually cried. … Knowing Darden believed in me enough to invest in my education pushed me to give my all, both in academics and leadership roles.”
Ines de Estrada (MBA ’24)

Darden was built on the shoulders of its faculty. And faculty remain Darden’s most valuable asset.”
Jim Cooper (MBA ’84)
Principal Donor and Campaign Milestone I Chair
Our teaching, research and practice are part of an integral whole that defines us. Without one, we would be lesser in the others. Together, they provide a calling — the ranks of which we feel privileged to be a part, thanks to the support of loyal Darden alumni supporters.”
Mike Lenox and Yael Grushka-Cockayne
Professors
Steve and Phyllis Bachand posing for a photo in a garden
I know Darden is worth the investment. With the case method behind everything Darden does, everyone connected to the School is empowered to tackle big ideas, including issues confronting society.”
Steve Bachand (MBA ’63)
Principal Donor
I invested a small amount of money in the fund early. … Over time, the annual fund, as a proxy for the Darden brand, became a long-term holding in my portfolio, delivering returns in both my life and career that far exceeded my initial expectations.”

The new Darden experience

Reimagining the Business School from the Ground(s) Up

Outdoor view of The Forum

You walk the Tahija Arboretum and LaCross Botanical Gardens.

If you’re a Full-Time MBA in Charlottesville, your day might begin here — a once-ignored hillside (and drainage ditch!), now a thriving sanctuary just steps from class.

Three people walking and talking together

You pass the rising on-Grounds student housing.

A first in Darden history — purpose-built to strengthen community and student life for MBA students living and learning together.

A person in conversation with a few other people

You look around the room — and it hits you.

Your classmates have served in the military, launched ventures, crossed oceans and taken bold bets on themselves. They earned their place here. Darden helps make the journey possible — with scholarships, support and a belief in what’s next.

The view from a students seat in a Darden classroom

Class begins with a case — and a challenge.

Your professor, recruited during the campaign, teaches with urgency and edge. The discussion is sharp. Everyone came prepared. The stakes feel real.

Three people seated in The Forum Hotel lobby/restaurant

Your learning team regroups in The Forum Hotel.

Where a fading inn once was now rises a four-star hotel and conference center — a place where students, alumni, faculty, recruiters and executive education participants gather, connect and keep the conversation going.

Four people having a conversation while overlooking the shores of the Potomac

Meanwhile, overlooking the shores of the Potomac — different tracks, same purpose.

At UVA Darden DC Metro, students in the Executive MBA, Part-Time MBA and Master of Science in Business Analytics programs meet at the Sands Family Grounds. From zero to 500+ students in the last decade, it’s now home to the largest contingent of students in Northern Virginia of any UVA school.

A row of students in a classroom

Students take classes in person, on evenings and weekends.

Working professionals. Global leaders. Career switchers and career climbers. The pace is different — but the bar is just as high.

Two people walking and having a conversation of Darden grounds

Each degree format follows its own path.

Different schedules. Different rhythms. Same core experience: rigorous, relational, transformational.

Two people walking up a sprial staircase

And across it all — one method still anchors the work. Show up prepared. Think on your feet. Lift others as you climb.

That’s the Darden way. Then. Now. Always.

Outdoor view of Darden architecture overlooking water

One Gift. Thousands of ripples.

A glimpse of generosity during the campaign — and the ripples it set in motion.

Pedro Matos

A match became a movement.

UVA’s Bicentennial Scholars Fund and Bicentennial Professors Fund multiplied philanthropy’s impact.

One scholarship became many.

One professorship became dozens.

One opportunity sparked a chain reaction.

Frank and Marjorie Sands

A hotel reimagined how we gather.

Frank Sands Sr. (MBA ’63) and his wife, Marjorie, made the lead gift for what would become The Forum Hotel — a bold new anchor for the Darden Grounds.

More than 100 donors followed.

Together, we’ve built a space where community, learning and leadership converge daily.

David and Jane Walentas

A fellowship opened new doors.

David Walentas (MBA ’64) and his wife, Jane, invested in access, leadership and academic excellence at Darden.

Their gift expanded Jefferson Fellowships, created new pathways for talented first-generation students and established a professorship in real estate.

The result: more seats at the table. And more people ready to lead.

View of The Forum building's reflection in a window

One course. Global perspective.

The Batten Foundation Darden Worldwide Scholarship made international study possible for every Full-Time MBA student.

No extra cost. No barriers.

Just firsthand insight, global fluency and a more connected Darden.

Ed Freeman

An idea became a legacy. Then a legacy sparked another.

Steve Bachand (MBA ’63) never studied under Ed Freeman — but he admires what Freeman stands for.

So he endowed a University Professorship in Freeman’s honor to advance values-driven leadership.

Soon after, a former student of Freeman’s stepped forward, on behalf of McIntyre Hawkings & Co., with a principal gift to the Institute for Business in Society.

Because real influence doesn’t end. It inspires.

Cav Man holding a sign saying 'Thank You Donors!'

One day made history.

In 2025, Day for Darden raised $1.37 million in just 24 hours.

Thousands of donors. Countless reasons. One unforgettable wave of pride.

Fourteen people with shovels breaking ground at the new LaCross Botanical Gardens

A garden rooted something bigger.

David LaCross (MBA ’78) and his wife, Kathleen, made Darden’s largest-ever gift — funding faculty, future student housing and the LaCross Institute for Ethical Artificial Intelligence in Business.

The gardens that bear their name?

They’re more than beautiful — they symbolize what’s growing at Darden.

Two people walking up a spiral staircase

One campaign. Thousands of stories. Unlimited aftershocks.

That’s the ripple effect.

That’s what you made possible.

The sun glaring through the columns at Saunders Hall

The unfinished case

The campaign ends. The mission continues.

The biggest case Darden has ever tackled? It’s the one still unfolding.

Powered by Purpose wasn’t the finish line — it was the launchpad. Now we’re asking the next set of urgent questions:

How do we create an environment where faculty thrive?

We’re fueling the ideas that change business and society by:

  • Building the Initiative for Transformational Capitalism — uniting the Institute for Business in Society and the Olsson Center for Applied Ethics — to scale Darden’s leadership in ethics, sustainability and stakeholder capitalism.
  • Building on the momentum of the Mayo Center for Asset Management to expand into areas such as private equity and venture capital — reflecting students’ growing interests and preparing them to navigate the future of finance.
  • Growing the Bruner Fund for Faculty Excellence to attract and retain the world’s best teachers and scholars.
  • Refreshing the Faculty Office Building to foster collaboration, spark innovation and give faculty room to grow.

Because great teaching is what makes everything else possible.

Two people walking at the LaCross Botanical Gardens dedication

How do we make a Darden education possible for every talented student?

Cost of attendance for the Full-Time MBA now tops $240,000. That’s a potential deal-breaker for far too many.

A fund for student excellence would provide flexible, need-based financial aid — unlocking potential and leveling the playing field for future MBAs.

We’ve started. But we need to go further.

A graduate in cap and gown

What happens when students don’t just attend Darden — they live it?

The new on-Grounds housing will transform student life, learning and connection. We’ve broken ground, and there are still meaningful ways to invest in its future.

Supporting this project isn’t just about buildings — it’s about community, competition and long-term sustainability.

These aren’t small goals. But Darden doesn’t do small.

We’re building a business school that rises to meet the moment — and the next one.

The campaign may be over.

But the case? It’s just getting started.
